Common Rail
What is Common Rail?
A common rail engine is designed to supply constant fuel pressure to electronically controlled injectors through a shared fuel reservoir. This means that the fuel supply is not dependent on the engine revs. A common rail system is built around four basic components:
  • A high pressure pump with pressure regulator and inlet metering valve.
  • A rail which contains a pressurised reserve of fuel.
  • Injectors which inject precise amounts of fuel into the combustion chamber as required.
  • A Diesel Control Unit – the ‘brain’ of the system, which precisely controls injector flow and timing as well as rail pressure while continuously monitoring the operating conditions of the engine.
Benefits of Common Rail:
  • Accomodates all planned emissions legislation
  • Opportunity for pre-injection and post-injection
  • Modular system
  • Compact
  • Full electronic control
  • Fuel Economy
  • Enhanced reliability and performance
  • Covers a variety of vehicle applications.
The Common Rail system comprises:
  • HP Pump with Venturi and Inlet Metering Valve
  • The Rail with Rail Pressure Sensor
  • The injector
  • The tube
  • The Filter
  • The Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
Applications for Delphi Common Rail systems include:
  • Dacia - Logan
  • Daimler Chrysler – Mercedes C & E Class, Vito, Vaneo and Sprinter
  • Ford - Focus I, Focus II, Transit Connect, Tourneo Connect, Transit and Mondeo
  • Jaguar – X400 (130hp)
  • JCB – Digger / earthmover
  • JMC – Van and bus
  • Kia – Carnival (145hp), Sedona (145hp), Pregio, Frontier and Bongo
  • Hyundai – Terracan
  • Nissan – Almera, Micra & Note
  • PSA – Peugeot 307, 407, Citroen C3 and C4
  • Renault – Clio, Thalia, Kangoo, Megane, Scenic and Modus
  • Ssangyong - Rexton and Korando
  • Suzuki - Jimny
  • Tata Motors – 1.4L Indica, Indigo, Marina 2.2L and 3.0L Safari SUV
  • Yuchai – 1.2L car

Many new Delphi applications are planned for the near future, as more and more vehicles are being introduced with Common Rail systems. Production volumes are increasing by up to 35% per annum and it is estimated that by 2007, over 80% of new diesel vehicles will incorporate Common Rail systems.

This represents a major potential market for the diesel specialist who can service and maintain such systems. However, specialist equipment and tooling is needed for the diagnostics, test and repair of Common Rail systems. Moreover, genuine Delphi Common Rail components and some of the special equipment is only available to authorised Delphi service centres.
